Drop in UK Bank Holiday Weekend Travelers

According to a recent report from the UK travel association ABA over one hundred thousand less Britons than the previous year will travel abroad this bank holiday weekend

However 1.8 million are still expected to get away for a few days especially due to half term breaks in schools. Once again Spain is the most popular destination among UK holiday makers with the Canary Islands proving particularly popular. This year sees a rise in the numbers travelling to Turkey and Egypt which have the added bonus of not using the Euro.

Despite much belt tightening all round many people are still opting for Florida this weekend due to some excellent sale prices currently being offered. Major cities such as Dublin, Paris, Rome and Amsterdam are also busy holiday spots at this time of year.

The majority of people will jet off from the south east of England with a total of 785,000 leaving from Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted while over 125,000 are expected to leave from Manchester

Learn how to Drive with Mario Kart!!!

I feel like we are writing a lot here recently at Murcia Airport Car Hire about the doom and gloom surrounding many areas of the travel industry so I thought id share this rather driving related story today to lighten the mood.

It seems that our friend in the USA have found a way of teaching their kids about the dangers associated with driving well in advance of the legal age by using the Mario Kart game on the Nintendo Wii.

At Vail Christian High School in Colorado students have been allowed to take part in the game under a “Distracted and Drowsy Driving Project” banner. The idea was formed in collaboration with local firemen and police officers.

Students are asked to play the game while talking on a mobile phone. A thirteen year old girl spoke of finding the task very distracting and difficult.

Hmmmm could work I guess. I’ve heard worse ideas.

Spain Government Offer Incentive to Airlines

The Spanish Government has taken action to help prevent decline in the countries tourism industry.  The Government has promised airlines who manage to increase numbers in the first half of the year tax incentives in the second half of the year as a reward.

The PM of Spain Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said the move was necessary to offer a helping hand to the countries tourism sector. Within the first six months of 2009 airlines must show an increase on numbers in the last six months of 2008 to qualify for the tax incentive. A tax cut of one hundred percent has been promised.

It is expected that airlines will then pass on the cuts to customers in an effort to boost business. Twenty million is expected to be spent by the Spanish Airport Authority on the project.

Not everyone has been in favour of the move with four airline groups issuing a statement saying the project was “confusing” and would not have a good impact on the industry.

Tourism in Spain employs over eleven percent of the population. Figure for the first quarter of 2009 show a drop of over sixteen percent on the previous year.

Murcia Airport most Popular Destination for UK

Jet2.com first came to the nation’s attention in February 2003 launching at Leeds Bradford Airport. Over the years the airline has become a major player in the budget airline market. The airline now offers over one hundred routes.

Jet2.com are now located at Belfast, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and more. Leeds Bradford Airport still has the most jet2 flights. As expected popular destinations include Faro, Malaga, Alicante etc however rather surprisingly the most popular destination for jet2 customers is Murcia Airport. The airline currently offers thirty three flights to Murcia from the UK per week.

In overall numbers Murcia Airport handles far less passengers than Alicante Airport which is located sixty kilometres away.  In 2008 there were 7.6 million more passengers in Alicante than Murcia.

Murcia offers much for the UK tourist with great value accommodation, food and Murcia car hire available. With money tight for many families this year it is still possible to enjoy a summer break in a location such as Murcia. There are also plenty of airlines offering cheap flights. As always shop around and find the best deals.

Hire a Car to see the Beaches of Murcia

Visiting Murcia can be a nice holiday, especially if you enjoy going to the beaches.  However, while you can take public transportation or even walk to some locations, hiring a car is really the best way to visit all of the beaches of Murcia.  You can also check out the nearby salt-water lagoons and see some rare animals and plants.  Whether you want to visit one of them or all, here is a list of the most famous Murcia beaches and a bit about them.  Since these beaches are actually located in areas or towns near Murcia, hiring a car is the best way to reach them.

El Mojon features brilliant white sands and waves that make it a favourite of sun bathers, sailors, and divers.  It’s a great place to take the family for the day.

Puerto de Mazarron is more of a tourist location located near Murcia.  You’ll find several hotels here, as well as nightclubs and restaurants.  Of course, there are a number of beaches, including Calnegre and Calblanque.  The local fish auction has also become quite popular among tourists.

The fishing village of La Azohia seems like a village lost in time.  You won’t find the nightclubs of Puerto de Mazarron here.  Instead, you’ll find lazy days and a relaxed, worry-free atmosphere.

These three locations provide something for everyone.  With a hire car, you can check them all out and get the most out of your Murcia holiday.

Book Murcia Airport Car Hire Early

Experts working in the travel industry are warning holiday makers to book their car hire early this year. Due to large demand and smaller fleets it may not be too easy to get a good deal if left too late.

The number of people renting cars dropped late last year as the current recession really started to bite. A lot of companies began to offer hire cars at bargain prices while others began to sell off part of their fleet.

Major car hire firm Avis now have a fleet which is twenty percent smaller than the one they had this time last year. This means that there may be a shortfall of cars during the busy holiday periods. Murcia of course is a very popular holiday destination so if you intend hiring a car in Murcia Airport it is advisable to start looking around now.

According to Clam Bason of Expedia the average car rental now costs on average $9 more per day. He added that he expects this number to increase over the summer.

Many people also have a favourite type of car which they regularly rent but failure to book early this year may mean having to settle for another rental car type.

Spain Still Top Holiday Destination for Brits

Many predicted that the weak sterling rate against the euro may have meant a change of holiday plans for British tourists this year however Spain remains as popular as ever according to a recent report.

The report undertaken by Holiday Extras put Spain at the top of the list. The managing editor of Holiday Extras Mike Whiting said that people are booking in advance this year with other notable popular getaways including Portugal, France, Turkey and the USA.

The reasons for Spain’s continuing popularity are easy to see. Cheap flights, cheap accommodation and cheap car hire. Even taking the poor sterling rate into account you can still have a budget holiday in Spain.

Travel Agent Thomas Cook recently reported that on average in Murcia you can get a 3 course meal for less than twelve pounds.

Spain Holiday Flights

The number of UK customers traveling with Monarch Airlines is on the increase. Traffic from UK Airports has steadily increased for the airline over the last few years.

The introduction of routes from Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester to Menorca as well as a Birmingham and Luton to Majorca route has seen the airline become a major fixture at UK Airports.

Readers of our Murcia Airport Car Hire blog will be pleased to hear that Monarch now offers flights from West Midlands Airport to Murcia Airport. Another new route available is Birmingham to Larnaca.

Passenger numbers for the month of April were up by ten percent when compared with March. Over four hundred and thirty six thousand people flew to sunny destinations with Monarch Airlines in April

The airport in Birmingham continues to grow year on year with over nine and a half million people using the airport last year. Plans are already afoot to expand the airport in the coming years.

Murcia at Christmas

Many Spanish cities have cut down on the amount they spend on Christmas decorations this year however Murcia is the exception. The cities “Light a Tree for Christmas” event was launched at the start of the month. 36,000 Euro extra was spent compared to last years festivities.

The lights that have been installed are low energy bulbs and will save the city 1,400 Euro on their electricity bill. Ecologists groups have been critical of the event in the past.

The event is a fantastic occasion in which designers from Murcia showcase their talent for decorating trees which surround the plaza. It is always a fun occasion for all the family with plenty to entertain everyone.

The mayor of Murcia Esteban Coscolluela spoke of how Christmas is a wonderful time for bringing together people as well as being a great showcase for Murcia and a proud moment for everyone involved.
